If you come across beautiful, colourful carrots, root parsley or parsnips on our market stalls, there’s a good chance they come from Ferme Le Maire Bio. A family-run farm based in Hesbaye, where a passion for organic farming has been passed down from generation to generation.
Deep Roots in Hesbaye
The history of Ferme Le Maire Bio began almost half a century ago. In 1978, Pierre Le Maire took over the family farm, which at the time specialised in sheep farming and the cultivation of beetroot and cereals. In 1986, he co-founded a carrot packaging company, before making a bold decision in 2000: to convert the entire farm to organic farming.
This conversion marked a turning point for the family. As Pierre’s son, Olivier Le Maire, recounts: “My father has rediscovered a sense of purpose in his work. Little by little, the farm has become 100% organic, specialising in root vegetables for the fresh produce market.” In 2014, Pierre set up a packing workshop in a barn on the farm, enabling him to wash and pack the organic celery, parsnips, coloured carrots and root parsley on site.
Olivier took over the family business in 2016. He has breathed new life into this venture and is tackling the challenges of modern agriculture with enthusiasm. His aim? To continue and expand the commitment to organic farming, adapt to climate change, and maintain a direct and transparent relationship with consumers through their own shop à Verlaine, symbolising an ultra-short and sustainable supply chain
At The Barn Bio Market, we work hand in hand with producers to bring you quality organic products, always at the best price!
