In the heart of Brussels, in 2015, NAO was born, with one objective: to offer a 100% organic and packaging-free alternative on the Belgian chocolate market.

A quality chocolate, accessible to all, sold exclusively in bulk, with no palm oil, colouring or preservatives. Simplicity and authenticity for a zero waste gourmet break!

Acting here and now

Nao is a 'Bean-to-Bar' chocolate, i.e. produced entirely from bean to bar! It's not a very common method. What's more, the majority of chocolatiers usually work with industrially-produced chocolates, so they don't master their own recipes. Nao works directly with the Cecaq-11 cooperative in Sao Tomé and the Norandino cooperative in Peru. In this way, they can offer them prices above Fairtrade standards, at a fixed price all year round. This protects cocoa producers from speculation. The aim of this transparent chain is to offer chocolate that respects everyone, from producer to trader to consumer. 

Bean-to-Bar and Single Origin chocolates

It's straight from Sao Tomé, the African island off the coast of Gabon, that Nao receives the beans used to make its chocolates! Nicknamed "the chocolate island", it is renowned for its top-of-the-range Amelonado beans, which make for an even tastier chocolate. The beans used to make 85% dark chocolate bars come from Peru. They are Criollo and Trinitario cocoa varieties.

To process these beans, Nao decided to set up its own production line in Brussels. In the workshop, Claudia and Joao work day in, day out to produce delicious chocolate of the highest quality! Their knowledge of the growers' methods, particularly when it comes to fermenting the beans, means that the roasting is fine-tuned to limit bitterness and release a wide range of aromas.
